Verity Coleman - Interbusiness and Through Process Specialist
I work in Tata Steel’s Port Talbot site and have had the opportunity to get involved in a range of process improvement programmes during my time here. I work with teams on a number of product lines and aim to identify any aspects of the process where there is room for improvement. So it’s about working backwards from issues or discrepancies in final products to unpick the process and identify how we can improve consistency and quality.?
Specifically this has seen me undertake extensive audits and reviews of all areas of the site to get to the bottom of issues around weight discrepancies in our end products. I’ve also co-ordinated an extensive batch testing regime for groups of coils supplied to a high specification for a customer that makes tubes.??This involved working across a cross functional team to understand how this testing could be applied within a very tight manufacturing schedule.
Mayuri Hargest - Process Specialist?
My experience as part of the Tata Steel graduate programme has really broadened my professional perspective. The projects that I have been involved in have varied greatly. Some have been really hands-on in the plant and others have been largely office based. All have been really challenging.
The diversity of work forces you to work outside of your comfort zone, and though this can be a little intimidating, I think it’s a good thing for your professional development. Once you realise that you can step outside of what you know and adapt your approach to new settings, your confidence grows and you can become a more versatile and multi-skilled individual.
Owen Jenkins - Process Technology Specialist
I’m based at the Port Talbot site but have also had the opportunity to work at our Llanwern Hot Strip Mill.? Since joining Tata Steel I’ve been able to work on projects that involve some really cutting edge technology, and it’s been immensely rewarding to make a personal contribution to complex and high value initiatives.
These have included commissioning and validating an x-ray strip thickness gauge in the Llanwern Hot Strip Mill that enables us to control the profile of rolled steel to incredibly precise detail. I’ve also helped to introduce the use of infrared filming and temperature measurement in continuous casting, which has seen us working with partners to develop new software and systems. Projects like these are fantastic opportunities to take what I’ve learned in an academic setting and apply it in real life. But I’ve also had to learn plenty of new skills very quickly too and that’s part of the challenge.
