    Our People
    APPRENTICES

Samantha Bird - Junior Automation Technician

For me, one of the most valuable things about apprenticeships at Tata is the very rounded nature of the training: I received a robust mixture of structured learning, on the job training and personal development, and the skills I have developed during my time with Tata will stand me in good stead for the rest of my professional life.

    Hazel Jones - Technical Apprentice?

My role allows me to develop a really thorough understanding of the products that we make and to develop my understanding of metallurgy, iron and steel. I’ve spent the last three months working in the Production (Spectroscopy) Lab and the next part of my programme will see me moving on to our Analytical Lab. So the programme is designed to give me practical, hands-on experience in a range of settings – so I’m confident that my understanding of steelmaking can only grow as I work through my apprenticeship.

Ewa Komincz - Higher Technical Apprentice?

I am currently in my first year of the Higher Technical Apprenticeship Programme, so I am still in the early stages of my career but I have already learned a great deal. Right now I am working within the secondary steelmaking department, which means we work with molten steel to add materials or put it through additional processes to affect the end product in different ways. This enables us to fine tune the composition of the steel and to meet more specific requirements and tailor the steel for different uses.

    Cameron McGleish - Mechanical Apprentice?

I’m currently part of the Tata Steel Mechanical Apprentice programme, based at the Basic Oxygen Steel Making (BOS) Plant in Port Talbot. It’s a four-year programme that’s got a strong emphasis on practical experience gained by actually doing the job, but also undertaking formal training to gain qualifications relevant to the role. When I’m on site I generally shadow an experience mechanical craftsman, so I’m always working with people who can share their knowledge and expertise with me.? And the company is sponsoring me to study an HNC in Mechanical Engineering so I’m learning a lot and getting the chance to put it into practice. I’m grateful for the opportunity to further my education and gain formal qualifications as I know they will enhance my career prospects in the future.

    Sion Morgan - Electrical Apprentice

Right now I’m in the midst of the final year of my apprenticeship and it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve learned a huge amount and have really enjoyed the opportunity to work with some highly experienced and knowledgeable people. Developing new skills in a practical environment really suits me and I’ve relished the opportunity to learn from those around me.
