Overview

‘Our customers use our products for manufacturing a variety of different components as well as end-products including ventilation ducts, cable racks, light fittings, silos, conveyors, cabin modules, refrigeration equipment and roofing products. Over 90% of our customers are located in Finland,’ reports Ilpo Maaranen, General Manager of Naantali Steel Service Centre.

The steel, supplied from Tata Steel’s manufacturing facilities in Europe and from quality third party producers, is delivered to the service centre mostly in coil form. Naantali Steel Service Centre then uses its eight processing lines to produce steel blanks and narrow coils in precise dimensions according to customer requirements. These production lines include four cut-to-length lines, three slitting lines and one recoiling line.

‘Our strengths include the range of processing facilities and our experienced and capable team, this helps ensure we keep quality levels high and deliveries are fast and reliable. Many of our customer relationships are long-term,’ Mr Maaranen reports.

Steel products are processed according to tight dimensional tolerances. Sheets are suitable for automated storage and machine tools equipped with sheet processing equipment. The material dimensions processed at Naantali can range from 0.4mm to 6mm in thickness in sheet lengths as high as 12 metres. Thicker hot-rolled and pickled cut length sheets are also a key part of the local inventory.

The short delivery times are partly due to Naantali’s extensive storage capacity. Steel is stored in our warehouses according to customer requirements, so products can be processed quickly as soon as they are needed. Meanwhile, our standard sizes service, offers delivery of sheet steel and hot-rolled products in set dimensions in 1 to 2 working days.

In addition, the well designed, clean, tidy storage facilities play a key part in ensuring that steel quality is not compromised at any point during the storage and production processes. The service centre puts great emphasis on maintaining rigorous work safety standards and procedures at all times.

The service centre began operations in Naantali as a steel warehouse in 1972. It has previously been owned by various companies, including Kesko and Rautaruukki. It became part of Tata Steel in Europe in 2015, at which point the Naantali Steel Service Centre was established.
